HUNGARIAN GASTRONOMY
The legendary Cafe Gerbeaud is one of the largest, most traditional, and most famous
cafe-confectioneries in Europe and is proudly located in the heart of budapest, the capital of
Hungary It is situated at Vörösmarty tér 7  in Budapest,. It is one of the greatest and most
traditional coffeehouses in Europe. Today still, it shines in Gründerzeit style with its stucco, the
grand chandeliers, the panelling made of exotic woods and its furniture. In 2009 Cafe Gerbeaud
opened its second confectionery in Tokyo, Japan. (

Tradition and Innovation
The tradition-rich history of Gerbeaud began in 1858 with Henrik Kugler, the third
descendent of a confectionery dynasty. During his years of travel and as an apprentice,
Kugler perfected his specialized knowledge of his art in eleven European metropolises,
including Paris. The influence of this experience is recognizable to this day.

Kugler opened his first café on what is now József nádor Square. Because of the
tastefully furnished salon, the assortment of Chinese and Russian tea specialities, and
„the best ice-creams in Pest,” it soon became a wellknown meeting place.

THE HUNGARIAN COFFEE HOUSE  - A MAGYAR CUKRáSZDA

Hungary had Cafe Culture before anywhere else in Europe. This was as a result of having being occupied by the Turks. The suave
Budapest coffee houses are integral to life in the Hungary capital.  During the Turkish rule, coffee was first introduced to the Hungarian
society and was known as the 'black Soup'.

To be and act like a
real Hungarian, you must make regular visits to a cukrászda as part of your trip.

The
cukrászda is generally an establishment that is a combination of: bakery, coffee house, gelato parlor and sweet shop. This institution
is one of the best things to come out of the ruins of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Hungarian
Káveház culture. You can sit at a table
with a friend and just have a coffee, buy a latte and a nice bite of cake and linger or just stop in and bring a little parcel home for the
family.

When visiting and dining in any of the famed cafes in Hungary, it is always a good idea to know in advance what sweet delights and
treats to anticipate in a country famous for its cakes and pastries.

Some suggestions for you to consider are:

The Gerbeaud Cake can be found in various forms across the city. Rigó Jancsi is created from squares of rich chocolate cake sandwich of
whipped cream and thick mousse, with the top square frosted with a thin layer of dark chocolate glaze.
Black Forest Cake or Fekete
Erdõ Torta
- is the German delight - light as air chocolate layers alternating with whipped cream and light chocolate mousse dotted with
sour cherries and of course, shaved curls of dark chocolate top the masterpiece. Some other delights are the famous
Italian Tiramisu,
Austrian Sacher
and the Russian Oroszkrém Cream Torte which is also something very lucious. The popular Piramis is also something to
behold and enjoy - a slice of a pyramid-shaped multi-layer cake. also popular is
Rétes strudel and the delectable chestnut puree
(Gszetenye Puré).

Budapest, the capital of Hungary, has some of the ancient coffee houses of its times, with Ruszwurm being the oldest. Hungary coffee
houses serve a variety of coffee drinks like Cafe Latte, Frappe, Cappuccino, Maraba Coffee, Choco-Latte, Mocha and Expresso. Some of
the popular coffee houses in Hungary Bécsi Kávéház, Augustz Cukrászda, Cafe Gerbeaud, Cafe Astoria and Múvesz.
